When Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry of the U.S. Navy visited Japan in 1854, two sailors were buried here, marking the beginning of the Foreigners’ Cemetery’s history. Hakodate saw a significant influx of foreigners for trade and military purposes, some of whom never returned to their home countries. In 1870, the Kaitakushi, the Colonization Commission, negotiated the establishment of this cemetery. The cemetery offers stunning views of Hakodate Port, especially at sunset, making it a popular spot for photography.
