Hakodate is situated at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido and is the third-largest city on the northern island. Its geographical location offers breathtaking night views from Mount Hakodate. As an ancient port city with a rich history, Hakodate is a significant center for Japan’s fishing industry. In 1859, Hakodate Port opened as one of Japan’s earliest international trading ports, alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki. Consequently, Hakodate is a culturally diverse city blending Western and Eastern influences. It features numerous churches and temples that attract both domestic and international tourists.

Walking around the base of Mount Hakodate is highly recommended. There are various facilities, shops, parks, and more lined up, making it unnecessary to travel far once you arrive. Visiting historic buildings like the British Consulate and the Public Hall is also worthwhile.

In the Bay Area, there is the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse, inside which are many shops. Hakodate offers unique restaurants and fast food, with Lucky Pierrot standing out prominently. If you search “Hakodate McDonald’s” on Google, you’ll likely find only about four results. This is because, in Hakodate, Lucky Pierrot has long been synonymous with hamburgers. Its taste and portion sizes far surpass McDonald’s, making it beloved locally and unmatched by anyone else.

Another local gourmet favorite is the grilled pork bento from Hasegawa Store. However, despite being called “grilled chicken,” pork is standard here; if you really want chicken, you need to specifically request “with chicken meat.”

Hakodate’s charm lies in its unique soul food, historic streetscape, and culture.
