The Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples (函館市北方民族資料館) is situated in the Bay Area, adjacent to the Soma Company Building. It houses collections donated by Osamu Baba and Sakuemon Kodama, renowned authorities in anthropology, archaeology, and folklore. Their extensive collections are highly regarded both domestically and internationally, focusing on the studies of northern peoples.

Admission Fee

  • Adult: ¥300 (group: ¥240)
  • Student/Child: ¥150(group: ¥120)
*Group admission fees apply to groups of 15 persons or more. When visiting on school field trips, even individual students can utilize group admission fees.

Facility

  • Old documents from Hakodate museum —  collected by Kaitakushi, Colonization Commission and volunteers in the Maiji era.
  • Baba collection — Studies of Karafuto, Chishima and Hokkaido around 1935. Ainu documents are designated as National important tangible folk-cultural property in 1959.
  • Kodama collection — The base studies about Ainu culture. He dedicate to collect Ainu documents and items by his own funds.
