Lake Shikaribetsu is one of the most mystical lakes, offering a unique charm different from that of Lake Mashu. While Lake Mashu is incredibly beautiful, you cannot engage in activities on its surface. However, at Lake Shikaribetsu, you can enjoy paddling activities like canoeing and kayaking, as well as hiking and mountain climbing in the surrounding areas.
In addition to daytime activities, the lake becomes a prime spot for stargazing at night. With almost no houses or buildings around, the lakeshore is literally pitch dark at night.
A new moon night provides an excellent opportunity for stargazing. If the sky is clear, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking display of stars. Under this starry sky, the pitch-black lake stretches out silently, creating a slightly eerie atmosphere. It’s worth noting that bears do inhabit this area, so walking alone at night is not advisable. Nonetheless, this magnificent scenery is an experience unique to this location.
Canoe and Kayak
According to the staff at the Nature Center, the lake is generally calm in the morning, with the wind gradually picking up as the day progresses. Therefore, if you plan to try activities like canoeing, the morning might be the best time. The water is incredibly clear, giving the impression of being drawn into its depths. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 100 meters and was formed approximately 30,000 years ago when volcanic eruptions in the surrounding area dammed a river.
Lip Mountain
Across the lake, you can see Mt. Hakuun and Mt. Tenbo, with Mt. Tenbo being particularly striking. The reflection of its twin peaks on the lake resembles lips, earning it the nickname “Lip Mountain.” When you first stop your car and gaze at the lake, it might look as if Lip Mountain is welcoming you to Lake Shikaribetsu.
Lake Shikaribetsu Nature Center
Across from the hotel is Lake Shikaribetsu Nature Center. They showcase various activities here, so it’s worth dropping by. However, please note that there are no English-speaking staff available, so I recommend using this Fleemy article as your reference.
Camping
The campground is available for three months from July to September. Reservations are not necessary, and you can pay at the caretaker’s lodge. The fee is incredibly low at 250 yen for adults and 150 yen for children!
At the campground, you can use cooking facilities and toilets. Camping here and enjoying the starry sky at night is also wonderful. The starry sky here is said to be so impressive that even locals are amazed by how well it can be seen.
Hiking
Hiking to Mt. Hakuun and Mt. Tenbo is also a highlight!
Mt. Hakuun is an accessible mountain that attracts many hikers on weekends. It’s suitable for beginners, but mountain weather can change quickly—even on hot summer days, temperatures can drop suddenly. Please ensure you have adequate equipment for your hike.
I’ll provide the hiking trail entrance on Google Maps for your reference.
