Noboribetsu Jigokudani(登別地獄谷)

This place is written as [登別地獄谷] in Japanese.

Jigoku (地獄) means hell and Dani/Tani (谷) means valley. This place is literally a “Valley of Hell.” It is a crater located in Noboribetsu City, one of the most famous hot spring resorts not only in Hokkaido but also in Japan.

There is a circular walking path, 600 meters in length, which is open from May to November and closed during winter.

The area features numerous gushing hot springs and fumaroles that contribute to the hot water supply of Noboribetsu Onsen.

The walking path is illuminated at night, offering a mystical sight. Additionally, there is a festival called the “Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri” (登別地獄まつり) held at the end of August, on the last Saturday and Sunday of the month. It’s a delightful event well worth attending.

If you visit Noboribetsu and stay in a ryokan or hotel for onsen, make sure to include a visit to Jigokudani in your itinerary. It’s an experience not to be missed.
