Motoizaka slope is located in Bay Area, the westward of Hakodate city. This is the base point for measuring a distance, so that this slope was named ‘Motoi-zaka’. ‘Motoi’ means “base” and “zaka” is “slope”. Usually we say “Saka” as slope. Both of them are the same meaning. There are many sight spots of Hakodate around the top of the slope such as Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, Old Soma Residence, the former British Consulate and so on.
