Sapporo Gokoku Shrine is located just south of the Sapporo Central Area, near Nakajima Park. The shrine is dedicated to the Tondenhei soldiers who lived in Sapporo during the Meiji era and died in the Seinan Civil War of 1877. Over time, it has also come to honor other soldiers who died in various wars, as well as police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
